What Qatar's water parks offer

Two parks. Different propositions. Both genuinely world-class.

Qatar has invested heavily in water parks over the past few years. Two venues are now operating, and they're not redundant — they sit at opposite ends of the experience spectrum.

Meryal Waterpark on Qetaifan Island North launched with a centerpiece you can't miss: The Rig 1938, an 85-meter drop tower holding two Guinness World Records (tallest waterpark slide tower and tallest waterslide). Around it: ~36 rides and slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, and family zones. About 25 minutes from West Bay — the urban day-trip option.

Desert Falls Aquapark at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort takes a different approach. 56 rides, the most in Qatar by ride count, paired with a 3.5km private beach and full resort amenities. Roughly 1.5 hours southwest of Doha. The full-day getaway option.

Neither feels like a "good for the region" compromise. Both are properly built, properly maintained, and properly fun.

How they compare

Different propositions, different days. Here's how to choose.

Pick Meryal if…

You want adrenaline (The Rig 1938 is the actual headline ride in Qatar, period), you're Doha-based and want a day trip without a long drive, or you have an afternoon rather than a full day. The 25-minute travel time from West Bay means you can do a half-day, eat at one of the Lusail restaurants, and be home by evening. Easier to book on short notice for weekends.

Pick Desert Falls if…

You want the full-day getaway, you're up for the 1.5-hour drive, or you want to combine a waterpark with private beach and resort food in one trip. The 56-ride count means kids genuinely don't run out of things to do. The QAR 150 day-pass-with-F&B-credit bundle is the value play if you'd be eating there anyway.

Both, in summer?

Both have indoor and outdoor sections, and both work in summer if you plan around the heat. Mornings are best — water itself stays comfortable even when air temperatures hit 45°C, and most rides have shaded queues. Afternoons in July-August are doable but harder on kids and slower-moving visitors.

Plan

Practical info

What to know before you go — season, gear, booking norms, and ride restrictions.

Best season

October-April is most comfortable. Summer is doable; most rides have shaded queues, and early-morning slots are the best window if you're going May-September.

What to bring

Swimwear, towel, sunscreen, water shoes (recommended for Meryal's slide tower stairs), and ID. Both parks have on-site food, but you can usually bring sealed water bottles.

Booking

Both accept walk-ins, but online tickets are typically cheaper and let you skip the gate queue. Buy in advance for weekends — Saturday afternoons fill at both parks. Water parks aren't on SurfX yet (we're rolling up Qatar lifestyle bookings into one app — currently live with one water-sports operator, Code Wake), so for now book direct through each park's site.

Family-friendly

Both have dedicated kids zones and shorter family rides. Neither is "thrill-seekers only" — small kids have plenty to do at either park.

Heights and ride restrictions

Most slides have height minimums (typically 110-120cm), and the bigger thrill rides go higher. Check the park site before bringing young kids expecting to ride everything — heartbreaks are common when a 100cm kid finds out they can't board the headline ride.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Qatar's water parks.

What's Qatar's biggest water park?
Desert Falls Aquapark at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort has 56 rides — the most in Qatar by ride count. Meryal Waterpark on Qetaifan Island has fewer rides but holds two Guinness World Records for The Rig 1938 (tallest waterpark slide tower at 85 meters, and tallest waterslide).
Is Meryal Waterpark or Desert Falls better?
Different propositions, different days. Meryal is the adrenaline pick and the easier day trip from Doha — closer (~25 min from West Bay), home of The Rig 1938. Desert Falls is the full-day getaway with resort beach access and 56 rides — 1.5 hours from Doha but worth it as a proper escape.
How much do Qatar water parks cost?
Pricing varies by season and ticket tier at both parks, and online booking is typically cheaper than walk-up. Desert Falls often bundles a day pass at QAR 150 fully F&B-redeemable, which makes the effective price lower if you'd be eating there anyway. Always check each park's site for current rates before going.
Are Qatar water parks open year-round?
Yes, both Meryal and Desert Falls operate year-round. Outdoor sections are most comfortable October to April. Summer is still popular — most rides have shaded queues, water itself stays refreshing even when air temperatures hit 45°C, and early-morning slots help dodge the worst heat. Indoor sections work any time of year.
